Original watercolor painting by Stephanie Kurtyka. As the roots envelop the serene visage of the Buddha, it conveys a sense of protection and an enduring connection between the spiritual and the earthly realm.
Painting inspired by my trip to Southeast Asia. The image of the Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree at Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya, Thailand, serves as a poignant symbol of the passage of time, impermanence of life and the beauty found therein. This was one of my favorite archaeological sites throughout the whole trip, as I felt it perfectly reflects the rich cultural heritage of Thailand. The Bodhi tree, known as the tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment, signifies enlightenment and reverence in Buddhist tradition.
